Gegründet wurde ifa im Jahr 1993 und hat seinen Sitz im Science Park der Universität Ulm. Die räumliche Nähe zur Universität erlaubt ifa eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit Deutschlands größtem Studienprogramm im Bereich Aktuarwissenschaften, z.B.  bei Forschungsaktivitäten und der Aus- und Weiterbildung von Aktuaren.
